L. v. Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 & Symphony No. 4

These interpretations of the Fourth Piano Concerto and the Fourth Symphony are amongst the first Beethoven recordings made by Karl Böhm after the Second World War. They are convincing due to Böhm’s characteristic precision and clarity of form. Serene, tranquil and quietly confident Wilhelm Backhaus produces a congenial realisation of the score together with Böhm. more...

RIAS-Symphonie-Orchester

L. v. Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 & Symphony No. 4

Karl Böhm and Wilhelm Backhaus enjoyed an especially harmonious artistic partnership. The two musicians worked together frequently, both on the concert platform and in the recording studio: their cooperation is well documented in the form of recordings for the radio and on disc. These interpretations of the Fourth Piano Concerto and the Fourth Symphony with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra from the early 1950s are amongst the first Beethoven recordings made by Karl Böhm after the Second World War. The G major Piano Concerto by Beethoven was a favourite of Wilhelm Backhaus. Serene, tranquil and at peace with himself, he presents a congenial realisation of the score together with Böhm. Karl Böhm’s virtues as a conductor, such as his precision, discipline and kapellmeister-like rigour, find an equal counterpart in the clear pianism of the 66-year-old Wilhelm Backhaus.”

You can find a “Producer’s Comment” from producer Ludger Böckenhoff about this CD on our home page: www.audite.de/sc.php?cd=95610.

The production is part of our series „Legendary Recordings“ and bears the quality feature „1st Master Release“. This term stands for the excellent quality of archival productions at audite. For all historical publications at audite are based, without exception, on the original tapes from broadcasting archives. In general these are the original analogue tapes, which attain an astonishingly high quality, even measured by today‘s standards, with their tape speed of up to 76 cm/sec. The remastering – professionally competent and sensitively applied – also uncovers previously hidden details of the interpretations. Thus, a sound of superior quality results. CD publications based on private recordings from broadcasts or old shellac records cannot be compared with these.
