Giovanni Bottesini, born in Crema near Parma, was considered the "Paganini of the double bass" and was the most famous virtuoso on this instrument during his time. He travelled as a soloist and conductor throughout Europe, Latin America and the USA, where he thrilled audiences with his virtuoso playing and musical expression. As a composer Bottesini left us at least 40 works for the double bass in various ensemble combinations. In this first complete recording Michinori Bunya, ARD prize winner and solo bassist with the Saarland Radio Symphony Orchestra, interprets Bottesini's works for the unusual ensemble of double bass and string quintet.
