Biographie

Burkhard Maiß was born in 1969 in Düsseldorf and began music lessons at the age of five. He won several prizes at the German competition "Jugend musiziert." In 1986 he enrolled at the Julius Stern Institute in Berlin and continued his studies under Professor Koji Toyoda at the Berlin School of Art. At that time he was first chair violinist and soloist with several chamber orchestras.

He attended the violin class of Professor Mandeau at the ‘Folkwang Hochschule Essen’, where he received his master's degree in 1996. He worked also with Thomas Brandis, concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, and Gyorgy Sebok.

Maiss is prize winner of many prestigious competitons, including the Stipendium of ‘Deutscher Musikwettbewerb’ in Bonn and the first prize of the `Folkwang Wettbewerb´ and was awarded with a scholarship from ‘VillaMusica’ and ‘Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst’.

He gave numerous master classes a.o. at Stanford, Ithaca, Philadelphia, Palm Beach, Madeleine Island, Brussels and Seaoul. Burkhard Maiss is founding member of the ‘Jacques Thibaud Trio Berlin’, with this famous string trio he traveled the world giving concerts for more than fifteen years. Burkhard Maiss plays a violin by Lorenzo Storioni built in Cremona (Italy).
