Mandelring Quartett: 18th HAMBACHERMusikFEST

Jun 10, 2014 | Sabine Wiedemann News Mandelring Quartett: 18th HAMBACHERMusikFEST

The HAMBACHERMusikFEST was founded in 1997 under the artistic direction of the Mandelring Quartet, and takes place each year during the week of Corpus Christi. The success of this international chamber music festival is determined by a unique combination of highest musical standards and delightful concert venues such as Hambach's famous Schloss, idyllic wine estates, and the town's beautiful baroque church.

The Mandelring Quartet's trademark is its expressivity and phenomenal homogeneity. The four individual musicians are as one in their shared determination always to seek out the innermost core of the music and confront musical truth. By grasping the spiritual dimension, exploring emotional extremes and working on detail, these musicians probe far beneath the surface, revealing complex meanings in music. At the same time, their approach to music is always both emotional and personal.

Winning a number of prestigious international competitions - Munich (ARD), Evian and Reggio Emilia (Premio Paolo Borciani) - initiated the Mandelring Quartet's international concert career.  The ensemble has appeared in Amsterdam, Brussels, London, Madrid, Paris and Vienna. The cities of New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Tokyo are also on their agenda, alongside frequent concert tours to Central and South America, the Middle East and Asia. The quartet has appeared at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Oleg Kagan Music Festival, the festivals in Montpellier, Lockenhaus and Kuhmo, the Enescu Festival Bukarest and the Salzburger Festival.

Numerous CD recordings, which have won the German Record Critics' Prize on several occasions and have been nominated for the Midem respectively the International Classical Music Award, bear witness to the quartet's exceptional quality and the breadth of its repertoire. Their recording of the complete string quartets of Shostakovich has been hailed by the press as one of the outstanding complete recordings of our time. Their discs of works by Schubert and Schumann have been selected as new benchmark performances, and also their recent disc of the string quartets of Leos Janáček received several awards.

Since 2010 the Mandelring Quartet has presented its own concert cycles in the Kammermusiksaal of the Berliner Philharmonie and in its home town of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. In 2011 and 2012 the Mandelring Quartet was invited to perform the complete cycle of 15 Shostakovich string quartets several times, e.g. in Berlin and at the Salzburg Festival.

In July 2014 the ensemble celebrates its 30th anniversary with "3 from 30!", a special anniversary concert weekend in the Radialsystem Berlin.
